A research into the history of the church in Kerala, these Jacobite or Orthodox claims and rivalries will have a hollow ring. It is the “brahmanical” claims of superiority or claims of alien origins of the church, uncorroborated by history, which is responsible for the mess in Kerala Church. The Christians of Kerala are very much the sons of soil.
Kerala Christians are a homogenous blend of proselytized Ezhavas and over 400 backward communities, most integrated, beyond identification, with the general body of the Christians. In urban areas, where their former castes cannot be traced, they have become Syrian. C V Kunjuraman was an Ezhava leader and a brilliant writer. His first cousin chose to be a Christian and in the early decades of the 20th century, rose to be a superintendent of police and established a family of “superior” Syrian Christians.
In a circle of 2 km radius taking with Kallumala junction in Mavelikkara taluk as centre, there could be traced 86 families of converts to Christianity from the Ezhavas. 18 were Syrian Christians some of whom were Kuravas in their first generation. The large compound where an imposing church, a school and a college of the CMS are situated originally belonged to a good family of Ezhavas. 157,813 Pulayas, 71,680 Parayas received holy baptism between 1921-31, most of whom, in the context of their progress, now advance the claim outside their native districts, if not taluk, that they are Syrians
A sizeable part of the Ezhava community, especially in central Travancore and in the High Ranges, embraced Christianity during the British rule, due to caste-based discrimination. The Jacobite Syrian Church from the beginning evinced special interest in Ezhava conversion, persuaded and baptized no less a person than the son of the brother of Sree Narayan Guru which as expected served as an impetus to several Ezhava families to swell the ranks of the Syrian church. A letter of arch-deacon J. Caley to Durrant on May 29, 1900, frankly and proudly admitted that the congregation of places like Cheppa, Puthupalli, Krishnapuram, Knakanal, Kanneti, Bhavanikara (Bharanikavu?), Kottayam and Klappana entirely consisted of Ezhava converts.
However a converted Ezhava has no feeling for the unconverted Ezhava. He severs from his family circle, envelops himself within an air of artificiality and strangeness, There are several instances where a converted Ezhava has taken up arms to strike heavily at the Ezhavas craving for justice. In the 1931 census when again converts on the basis of their caste or tribe were enumerated, as against 1,68,573 Nadars; 30,539 Mukkuvans; 22560 Arasans, only 2311 Ezhava converts were prepared to reveal their caste, The remaining Ezhava converts formed a substantial section of the 4,51,197 Christians, who refrained from divulging their caste or got included themselves in the Syrian Christians.
The main objective of Ezhava conversion was more social and political than religious, and the faith became a binding force only with the second or third generation of converts.
No other part of India had widespread conversion to Christianity than Kerala and not other community has lost so a huge numerical strength to Christianity and Islam then the Ezhava or Tiyyas of Kerala.
The Syrian Christian are untouchables to the high caste Hindus and Mannathu Padmanabhan made it clear that if a sudra (Nair) touches a Syrian Christian, he should take a bath and that is what he should do even if he touched a Paraya or Pulaya.
More than 1.52 lakh of the Christians did not reveal their caste for these reasons. All Christians today have taken Syrian as a prefix or as a suffix to their denomination and within a period of a century moving out of their village to a quite new surrounding they cleansed themselves of the stains of caste and forged unity and solidarity. The borrowing of the adjective Syrian by every denomination in fact put an end to all distinctions among the Christians to forge unity among them.
